PMC Releases 400G OTN Chip with SDN

March 2015 – The bandwidth for metro networks is increasing quickly and on a ramp to double the next two years to over 110Tbps by 2017. This is a continuation of the doubling every 2 years trend that started in 2013. This traffic is driven by IP video and Data Center/cloud based traffic. The new chip is the called the DIGI-G4 and is the 4th generation OTN chip from PMC. The device features 4x100G ports for single card 400G capacity for metro networks at 50% of the power per 100G port over previous chips.

The increasing use of the cloud workloads between Data Centers not only requires this higher bandwidth, but also requires secure communications on that path. The DIGI-G4 chip supports encrypted payload transport at the client level. This allows secure personal service in the cloud along the entire transit path. As these workloads are dynamic, the new OTN environment requires transport SDN control which can provide on-demand virtual networks and variable bandwidth services. These bandwidth services can scale as needed from 1G to 100G. These data center connections typically require 100Tbps or more of interconnect, utilize high density 100G DWDM links and require nano-second latency with the encryption enabled.

The new OTN from processor brings the industry’s f1st sub-wavelength OTN encryption while allows for simultaneous groom & switch of OTN and packet traffic over the 100G wavelengths for multi-wavelength convergence. This is supported by using internal 100G gearboxes that can support both 1x10G and 4x28G configurations.

The single chip solution reduced the power on a 400G interface by supporting four (4) CFP4 connectors with 100G each on a single card. This allows for the creation of a 1U-2U unit that featured SDN control. The development of the card and system is based on the SDK for the IGI-120G and updated for the DIGI-G4 features. As a result, the DIGI adapter is an extension of the known good an proven application library and the application driven API from the DIGI-120G and also features Host CPU crash restarting capabilities. The product is SDK is already carrier qualified in China, North America and the EU.

The product is currently sampling and production is scheduled for 2015.
